Thirty-Two

When Jordan woke up the next morning, the warmth of skin pressed next to him. Turning over, a topless Lloyd lay on his back, his eyes closed, breathing deeply.

Instead of being ashamed or even worried, Jordan turned over and laid his head on his chest, then wrapped an arm over him. Lloyd had shown up half an hour after the call. The pair had talked, had one drink, and then Jordan had allowed himself something he had been ignoring for months.

Stirring, Lloyd stretched. The blankets lifted ever so slightly, and Jordan realised Lloyd was naked.

“Morning,” Lloyd’s croaky voice said.

“Morning.”

They laughed, neither of them looking at one another. Today, their relationship had reached a new point. There was no going back from this, yet there was no going forward either.

“I hope you’re not thinking of that murder case,” Lloyd said, wrapping his arm around Jordan’s shoulders.

“Yeah, I was thinking I’d rather be putting that together than being here.”

“Quite rude.”

Jordan looked at Lloyd, who kissed him lightly on the lips.

“Quite rude indeed.” Jordan smiled.

They could hear life outside on the street, since Jordan’s window had been left slightly ajar from the night before.

Lloyd turned his head to the closed blinds. “What are you going to do today?”

“I need to get that interview with Margaret.”

Lloyd shifted where he lay. “Instant turnoff.”

Jordan grinned. “I’m sorry.”

“You don’t want to spend the day with me?”

Jordan moved away from Lloyd ever so slightly. “I just thought…”

“Calm, Jordan,” Lloyd soothed. “I know.”

Jordan felt relieved, if a little ashamed. Lloyd didn’t need to be told that last night had been a one-off. Jordan had felt lonely, had felt a desire he had been suppressing, and Lloyd had been there. Of course, Lloyd had been hoping to get Jordan on a date ever since they had met. At least now the date had been skipped.

Lloyd went in the shower, walking past Jordan naked, and then the rushing water sounded in the room next door. Waking up today had been fun. Jordan missed companionship, someone to spend the time with. Friends were fine, but intimacy was on another level. And Oscar was, of course, a cat. Jordan hadn’t been one to sleep around, and he didn’t consider this to be something sordid. He knew Lloyd, knew that on some level they could work.

But Jordan wasn’t ready.

Lloyd left after breakfast, saying he had something to do with his mother. The thought of Lloyd’s parents made Jordan remember Peter and the emptying of his mother’s house. Jordan said goodbye and kissed Lloyd lightly on the cheek, savouring Lloyd’s cheeky smile, and then, once the door was closed, Jordan rang Peter.

“Do you want to go to Mum’s today?”

Peter breathed in, seemingly afraid of the prospect of seeing the life of a woman he used to love. “Yes.”

After showering and changing, Jordan quickly made some notes on the case. Why was it so important that Margaret was married to Joseph? There was a memory, rotting in his brain, but he could not call it.

“Be good, Oscar,” Jordan called as he left his apartment.
